Bemerkung
In the 1940 Detroit census I found Leonard my grandfather living in a hotel in Detroit. His name was found as Lenord Ratakitka lodger 419 Michigan ave. Detroit. The owner/family is Sam Monoster.

Bemerkung
Leonard was known to have a candy store. He had a restaurant also. What we did not know is where he got the idea for a candy store! Casmir Fife was a undertaker in southside Pittsburgh 1880's and later in 1900's. At one time this friend of John ‎(Leonard's father)‎ had a "candy store" a livery stable and co-owner of a funeral parlor - several different locations SS Pittsburgh ‎(once was Birmingham)‎ is west of Pittsburgh across the river. Carmir Fifer was the attest for daugfhter Lottie's marriage in 1890. Rose and her two other kids did not come over till 1892.

Bemerkung
I found that ‎(it is likely)‎ leonard did not marry Ludwika ‎(married Wilhelm)‎ because a new marriage is shown - one year to the day.
In September ‎(4)‎ 1926 Ludwika marries Frank Jakubesky.

Bemerkung
Another note - is the house in the picture ‎(seen on Antonia's media)‎ with my aunt Mary dressed up - is a new built house. Her husband Leonard was an agent for a real estate company across the street on Davison. He built the house and the business ‎(stores)‎ on either side on his house. Also the house ‎(he built)‎ was a copy of a design found on Swan street in Cleveland.

Bemerkung
Interesting - Leonard built the first house for his family in Davison ave. There was a very similar design in Cleveland:

I found it on Swan street - Cleveland) where they lived in a rental of many Cleveland. He likely took the image of the design ‎(he admired)‎ due to his large family.

Built it ‎(modified)‎ across the street on Davidson ave. from the real estate he worked for as an agent. He decided after years of rentals in New Kensington, Pa. - south side Pittsburgh, Pa. and Youngstown, Pa. and the rentals in Flint... North Branch... Detroit... Her would build a BIG house. Later it burned down so he bought a temporary house in Hamtramck ... and started to build a dutch colonial for Antonina on Packard street which she lived in till her death. Before - of course he moved on and was divorced from her. He honored her.

Bemerkung
On 3-30-2017I added new details of my grandfather Leonard Ratajski and his desire to achieve the American dream. In America Leonard learned the skilled trade from a professional stone mason! The person was his father Johann Ratai - who changed his name to Ratajski. Johann was trained in Poland. See his details.

Leonard was taught how to build - construction of homes and professional buildings. His father Johann was involved in building homes and professional buildings ‎(two still standing in Koppel area of Penn.)‎ 1895-1897. Johann also did small odd jobs to bring in money though his health was very poor.

As for Leonard, keep in mind his love for his wife Antonina was life long though he did not stayed married. Instead he ‎(from late 1920 to later in 1927)‎ build his first wife at the time and father to all his children TWO new homes. A few were temporary homes until he build new ones. Due to two fires - one 1921ish - rebuilt and the final fire on July 23, 1924 at 2508 East Davison ave. took the house all the way down. The #43 fire house at Goddard could not provide enough water to stop the fire! So GF Leonard provided temporary housing in at 12105 Mitchell in Hamtramck until he build a proper NEW house on Packard for Antonina. And who lived with Antonina besides Raymond at Packard was adopted son of Uncle Ed and Aunt Mary and Aunt Helen and Uncle Albert Liberia and daughter Pauline. Also another daughter Katherine. Look up 1930 census on Packard.

The man ‎(as noted by my cousins stated "when he had money he spent it)‎. Take a look at the construction of business on Davison ave. and later his final home for his divorced wife Antonina.

When Antonina died in 1934 her son Raymond and his wife Helen eventually sold off the property on Packard. Some money was split between family members though my dad kept much for himself. Buying another few houses before settled on Stephens by 1939.

Bemerkung
After reviewing many details of what GF Leonard Ratajski ‎(trades learned)‎... I find he flipped houses and filled them with family and later sold what he had. He learned all the ways of real estate from his father John a stone mason... There were many lessons learned.

He had per many cousin's interviewed by me - that GF Leonard owned a large plot of land. I am stating he did so on Davison in Detroit.

If you look at what was many houses and many new houses... Including the new one ‎(free on mortgage)‎ in Flint - then you understand how SMART he was.

History - proved he respected his first my wife and made SURE she never had to worry about day to day situations...

Dan

NOTES:

‎(1)‎
GF Leonard lived on Swan street which was changed to West 5th street in later years.
GF Leonard thought big - learned from his dad John to find ‎(in my opinion)‎ an area that will
prosper and grow. Elaine of Cleveland talked about a large piece of land and so did Marie who died
a few years back. What is of interest is the documentation - I provided!

I see Kroger east side of GF's #2508 Davison house - a huge house and on the west side of his house
The Great A&P Tea Company. And of interest - the house design ‎(1895-1900)‎ in Cleveland started out as a 8 family unit -
later years ‎(in 1960's)‎ was converted to a 2 family ‎(est. of years)‎ in Cleveland ...

The note - the structures are similar -  to the one on  Swan street he lived on in 1900. And ‎(as I wrote)‎ this similar design house
in Cleveland was built about 1900. Like I wrote - he lived on that street 1900 ‎(see 1900 census Cleveland)‎ Swan street.

So - I provided support documents - that of the street in Detroit where was #2508  E.Davison house was and surrounding
building I believe he sold/constructed - built on his land....

‎(2)‎
I did not know at the time looking at download GF Leonard was in between ‎(professional grocery buildings)‎ his house at 2508 East Davison ....
Look at 2512 and ‎(maybe GF Leonard - made deals for land and ALSO - sold 2512 - which shown on the 1923 city directory is -
the A & P Tea Company - that is there ! The two grocers (companies)‎ were in competition in Detroit.
The area was prospering real well on East Davison.

Think of it Leonard Ratajski had Kroger and A & P markets... Either side of his House...Likely was originally his land.

I added my notes - see below to figure out what was on the south side as GF's house...

‎(3)‎

My conclusion is the A&P per my guess ‎(since I knew little of Kroger - we never shopped there???)‎ did not have locations in the Detroit?

In 1923 a Pharmacy was at #2500 Davison Southside as GF Leonard's huge well build house ‎(he was at 2508)‎.

In 1925 #2500 was a Pharmacy and #2502 was Kroger Grocery and Baking Co.

And- #2502 is a Kroger Grocery and Bakery Co. ‎(just like today Kroger business)‎!

So in 1931 Kroger bought out the Pharmacy at #2500 to enlarged the grocery to become 2500-2502....
And at that time #2508 did not exist ‎(waas burned down and not rebuilt)‎ nothing was re-build on that section of property
that ‎(I think GF Leonard owned...!

So this may be what cousin Marie mean's about GF Leonard built a supermarket????

(4)‎
Originally - You maybe ‎(did not hear)‎ about GF Leonard having a large property in Detroit. Elaine and maybe the other cousin's
told you/me too. You have to consider who his father was - a stone mason ... He was a builder. Knew concrete and forms...
Likely did carpenter work as well. Per my dad Raymond - John was a builder - helper in the Koppel and Hoytdale area.
The area was a small town wanting to be bigger. That is why he ‎(John)‎ moved to Hoytdale, Pa. There he did what he knew. The son Leonard...
learned the trades from John. My father shared his knowledge of location of a town that started with or had a "Y" in it? He did not
remember where exactly though he thought the area was north of Beaver Falls. And that a Roman Catholic church which burned down
was the place John and Rose lived in about 1895-? Alphonse was the brother who knew it all - though he died before I couls talk to him.
So my father was the only available knowledge base! Later I figured that the town was NOT YOHE but was a town named Hoytdale. And it had the
burned out church ‎(several times)‎. That Rose left the area and went east with a nurse she helped with births. Her husband died a year or so
before John died ‎(Sept. 30, 1898)‎ in the railroad workmans houses in that area. ‎(see notes on find a grave for John and Rose)‎. Also Rose moved
east with her friend ‎(got paid for birth work)‎ to Warwick, NY.

My dad would give me hints.... saying they came over as family ‎(Ratajski)‎... Leonard was first listed as a butcher... ship log.
Later as a daily worker - he moved up to plumber in 1906 city directory and lived ‎(owner)‎ a shotgun house - where each room
was entered thru a doorway ... to the back. That was the first house he mortgaged/owned. Because in 1906 he was on the way to North Branch.
A sister was born on the way ‎(Katherine - likely Mt. Clemens)‎ then my dad Raymond was in North Branch. GF Leonard was listed on my
dad's birth record as a beet weeder!

Now fast forward to Flint where little John as born in 1912 and later died in 1914 Hamtramck...The place GF Leonard got ‎(in Flint)‎
was LAND ‎(in my opinion)‎ and built the house ‎(free and clear)‎ thne sold it when they went to Detroit ‎(again)‎...
Because Teena stated GF Leonard lost in a sheriff sale his land ‎(maybe even a house in New Kensington, Pa.)‎ ...
I never got it straight from Teena...

So Grea GF John as the local mason in Hoytdale/ Koppel area of Pa.
That is where he live with Rose his wife and DOG ‎(called mutt)‎! The picture I had given to Violet was at Hoytdale Post office...
John did the sidewalk... The detail was from my dad... back in the late 70's... He had asked me to make a copy of th picture with wife Rose
in what was then a town Hoytdale ‎(not YOHE)‎.

When John died Sept. 30, 1898:
This means GF Leonard and other family members chipped in to bury John in Hoytdale cemetery with two headstones - one for John and Rose.
According to my dad the burial lined up to the front doors of the ‎(later burned out)‎ church ‎(see "find a grave" website - I posted my details.
Per church fathers ALL stones are deep - John and the two headstones are buried way deep - and at the extreme back of the church. My dad told me
of a large tree that was in line with the headstones (the burial plot of John and headstone of Rose faced west according to tradition. However
after years of age it became a stump... That is what I needed to verify location of John. My dad said a LARGE tree was to the west of John's
grave and that his grave was in line per Fonze (per my dad)‎ with the center line of the now burned ‎(razed)‎ church front doors.
So it was of some help a local
lady took pictures for areas related to c/l ‎(front to back or south to north)‎ of the doors of the church named St. Teresa's.

And Rose is buried in Warwick, NY. She left the state after some time ‎(even was found in a 1900 census in Wisc. with a daughter)‎... Two births
‎(she helped with - being a birth mother)‎ were months apart where the two sisters lived on farms...
Note - Rose worked with a real nurse in Hoytdale... Both lost their husbands about a year apart... I had acquired the location of Rose's plot detail.

The pix ‎(in Hoytdale)‎ was of John and Rose and dog named mutt in a pix of them - going to attend the funeral of their friend and ‎(his wife the nurse)‎.
Rose moved back east ‎(make a living)‎ with the nurse and that family. She died and is buried ‎(Warwick)‎ there in May 21, 1918. GF Leonard wanted
to move her body back to be along side John - but his money was ‎(guess what)‎ tied up in property and etc in Detroit. He did have a phone
number ‎(gave Barbara - you aunt)‎ long ago I got from ATT... So ‎(likely)‎ GF Leonard was contacted and cost
prohibited her return burial along by John..

So what we have for you today is that GF Leonard totally owned the house and property in Flint which bankrolled his business ventures
in Detroit. See the two pictures of the Flint - house - hard to see though it is clearly top rate...
